Envisioning Ancestors with Artificial Intelligence
Following an overview of the Virginia Untold collection, Library of Virginia staff will introduce artificial intelligence (AI) image generation, including the ethics and limitations of this new technology. Three free AI image-generation tools will be demonstrated. The remaining time will allow participants to explore the three tools and experiment with generating images of Black and multiracial people described in historic records. Staff will provide several descriptions drawn from Virginia Untold records that participants can use. Alternatively, participants can bring their own historic descriptions of their ancestors to use during the hands-on portion. We will conclude with a discussion about the benefits and shortcomings of this technology and how you might use it in your genealogical practice.
